Start training at the Midwest Aikido Center

Whether you're brand new to aikido, returning to martial arts, or looking for a thoughtful program for your child, we'll help you find the right way to begin.

Getting started is simple

No prior experience, special athletic ability, or martial arts background is needed to begin at the MAC. Either register online or in the dojo. Just show up and start training! Not sure yet? You're always welcome to observe any class first. Please arrive 15–20 minutes before the start of class to allow sufficient time to chat with the instructor.

We welcome adults, children ages 8+, and experienced practitioners visiting from other dojos.

How to get started

1

Register online or in the dojo

Complete the membership form online in a few minutes, or register in person when you arrive. New adult members qualify for our 2-for-1 introductory offer. View the schedule to pick your first class.

2

Show up for your first class

Adult classes run weekday mornings and evenings, and weekend mornings — see the full schedule. Children's classes every Saturday at 10:00 AM. Arrive 15–20 minutes early to get oriented, meet your instructor, and get outfitted with your gi (uniform).

3

We'll take care of the rest

Your gi (uniform) is included with membership — nothing to buy before you arrive. Your instructor will meet you on arrival and get you started on the mat.

Adult membership

Adult training at the MAC is designed to be consistent, challenging, and accessible to all levels. Classes are offered throughout the week. As a 100% volunteer-staffed non-profit, dues go directly toward maintaining the dojo.

What to expect on day one

Beginners start in any and every class — there is no separate beginner's course. For your first couple of classes, you'll be paired with a senior student who will give you basic orientation and instruction at your own pace, until you're ready to join the class as a regular participant. Everything is always done at a level and speed you're comfortable with.

The dojo has men's and women's changing rooms with showers. You'll change into your gi when you arrive, so bring something suitable to carry it home in afterward.

FAQ

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Beginners are always welcome, and many of our members started with no martial arts background at all.

Do I need to be in great shape?

No. Students begin from many different fitness levels and progress over time. Regular training is often what gets people into shape — not the other way around.

Can I just come watch a class first?

Yes. You are welcome to observe any regular class, and no appointment is needed. Just show up at least 15 minutes before the start of class to introduce yourself and have a chat with the instructor.

I already train in another martial art or aikido style. Can I visit?

Yes. Experienced practitioners and visitors from other dojos are welcome. Contact us in advance if you'd like to discuss your background — otherwise, feel free to just show up.

Am I too old to start?

We have active practitioners in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. Aikido is one of the few martial arts that genuinely improves with age — patience and experience matter more than speed or strength.

More questions? Contact us — we're happy to talk.

“The MAC is very welcoming to new members! I joined knowing absolutely nothing about martial arts and I feel I've learned a lot in several months. Senseis and fellow students have been patient, kind, and supportive. It does not feel like a place of competition, but one of collaboration.”
